Dr. King Concussion Zoom Session

18/1/2021

Picture
Last year we advertised a Zoom session with Dr. Doug King regarding concussion as part of our player safety program.

Awareness of the injury and the protocols around it is knowledge that should be shared widely - players, coaches, officials, parents & administrators - we can all play a part and this session is for all those people.

Dr. King has both clinical experience and practical experience having been a medic attending Ruby and League games.
The session will include a discussion on prevention & identification and why we need to be very careful about the safety of our players.  Plus some war stories from his experience.
The session is not about safe tackle – Dr king is not a Football coach.

Please spread this link to the session widely in your club so that members, parents and other interested people are aware that this session is available to them and are welcome to Zoom in.

New Competitions in Wellington in 2021

9/12/2020

Picture
American Football Wellington is delivering two new formats of the game for the January 2021 season.
Link to the AFW page here for more information.

Tackle Football
Covid-19 and the consideration of sharing equipment has meant that for the 2021 season in January AFW has made the decision to deliver a modified form of American football - F7FL.
This is a 7-a-side, full contact, no gear version of the game with special consideration given to the tackle rules which heave been modified to ensure that the game remains safe for our players.
The teams will be based around the existing clubs so if you are interested contact your local club:
    Wellington Wolves
    Hutt Valley Spartans
    Porirua Warriors

Flag Football
The Capital is hosting the first ever Flag Football League every fortnight from the 16th January until the 27th February in Wellington.
If you want to test your American football skills in a fun, fast & non contact sport, register your interest as an individual or team below.
You do not need to be a club member to play and you can register as a team or as an individual looking for a team.
FLAG FOOTBALL REGISTRATION OF INTEREST FORM HERE

The season
The season will consist of four tournament style weekends for both tackle and Flag Football.
Both F7FL and Flag will be played at Cannons Creek grounds in Porirua on the following dates:
    January 16
    January 30
    February 13
    February 27
Finals Weekend for F7FL March 6

Concussion Zoom Session with Dr Doug King

9/12/2020

Picture

As a sport we are often referred to as the worst sport for concussion incidents and whether that is true or not we should all be aware of the danger this type of injury poses to our players.

Awareness of the injury and the protocols around it is knowledge that should be shared widely - players, coaches, officials, parents & administrators - we can all play a part and this session is for all those people.
Dr. King has both clinical experience and practical experience having been a medic attending Ruby and League games.
His knowledge, experience and advice will be helpful to our playing community.

This is a great opportunity to show that we are proactive in addressing player safety.
As a cautionary note for all clubs and players here is an article regarding an incident that happened in England that resulted in the death of a player.  This describes a situation that we do not want to be in whether it is in practice as this was or on game days. Article here.

Please spread this widely in your club so that members are aware that this session is available to them.
Anyone who registers will receive the Zoom invitation directly plus the link will be able to be shared to others.
