Why? |
First - it is fun to try a different sport requiring different skills.
We are not trying to convert rubgy players, or other players, to American Football but not all players get to pursue their sport at a higher level and this may open an opportunity for some to pursue a different sport or a different educational opportunity. |
What is it? |
An NBA style Combine is a combination of the drills that are run at an American Football Combine and other fun activities designed to be entertaining for the participants.
It includes:
|
Who is it for? |
The opportunity to take part in a combine is open to anyone although we would generally aim this at year 9 and above for both genders.
Results are made available to the individual through the NZAFF app with a password and, if permitted by the individual, the top results are published. If a player wants to look at the scholarship option then it is best done from ages 15 up. (see below). |
Who delivers the Combine? |
NZAFF delivers the Combine.
We have invested in the electronic timing equipment so that the results are accurate and can be compared across different events. NAFF are not a scouting organisation nor are we recruiting for more players (that generally happens through the clubs). The offer is to show another sport, have a fun experience and to provide players who are interested the opportunity to have statistics they can use if they want to apply for a scholarship. |
How is it delivered? |
The event an be run at any time that suits the schools program.
If you are interested then contact the NZAFF General Manager, gm@nzaff.co.nz, 09 9734058 and discuss where and when is best for the school. |
What about scholarships? |
The opportunity for a scholarship is an educational opportunity that can be transfrormational for the pupil and their family.
A scholarship does not mean making it to the NFL. Taking part in a Combine does not automatically put any player on a scholarship program. What we provide is an opportunity for players to obtain a record of performance in the combine events that helps scouts determine who has potential. NZAFF can provide players with links to Scouting groups that will help them through the process of applying for scholarships and can provide some advice on who might be a good scout. In order to gain a scholarship players need to be focused on their academic results - they will have to maintain a high level in order to retain the scholarship. The next most important attribute of the player is their social adaptability so that they remain at the school during the scholarship and not drop out because they miss home. The third consideration is the players sporting ability. If their academic and social strengths are not up to standard then their sporting ability is generally dismissed. As a result of this players looking for a scholarship need to keep their on-line social footprint low, and their focus on the goal high. Like many pupils that are focused on sport their time management and application will need to be particularly good leading to them being some of the best pupils that the school produces. |
